Introduction

Nutrition goes hand and hand with all health care. Unless there is a clear understanding of the relationships between nutrition and other diseases, attempting to solve one problem without solving the other will not work.

Unless information is available as to the cause of under-nutrition, for example the difference between chronic under-nutrition or acute under-nutrition, the problems cannot be solved. Unless information is available on other deficiencies such as proteins, vitamin A, or iodine then again again we will be unable to correct the problem.

InHCc was requested to review the costs of two hospitals that BNGO operated.  The data returned (some of it) showed that one hospital (A) had almost three times the cost per patient for food as hospital (B). The other hospital (B) had three times the cost of medication as hospital (A). These were the numbers. Now it was up to management to determine why. The answer...Hospital (A), that had the highest food costs, was ran by a physician [a great man] that believed that "food was one of the best medicines" that a rural hospital could give to poor people. He believed that all the medicines in the world would not help a person who was malnourished. He elaborately planned every meal with complete nutrition.

Hospital (B), the one with the low food and high med cost, ran along without any thought so every of food. It fact, since there was a budget cut, food was the first budget item cut. Since medications were generally donated to the hospital, these where used "without any cost to the hospital."

Kind of makes you wonder!
