Mazatlan has a “potential” problem with the CFE Electrical Transformers that are being place in close proximity to pedestrians and food establishments. Older Transformers and transformers with damage due to corrosion caused by the salt air and water are very visible in Mazatlan (see transformers off Olas Altas at Constitution across from Federal Building)
These transformers may contain PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) which is a highly toxic chemical banded by the United Nations according to the Stockholm Agreement in 2002
.In 2007 a survey showed that 15% of the transformers in Mexico still had PCBs. A nationwide recall of PCBs used in the electrical supply industry has been made by the World Health Organization. One study documented significant contamination in Sinaloa.
There are NO transformers visible in Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque, Puerto Vallarta, or Los Cabos. Mazatlán cannot compete with these cities if we look like a garbage dump for toxic waste or we have to walk past these forest of electrical transformers at every corner. Each of these “tourist cities” has their jewelry stores, beaches, Restaurants, and new "towers", etc… but Mazatlan has their Centro Histórico Mazatlán. This is Mazatlán most valuable asset and is the only city on the "Tourist" route that has one. We need to protect it.
Please go to "Recrea" on Constitution street and ask to sign a petition to remove these Electrical Transformers from view.
