It is much more important long term to understand "why" a client became sick then the fact that he or she is sick. It seems that the medical professional often forget about this in their analysis of benefits of an Information system.

Introduction

Until today, IT investments have not delivered the expected benefits promised. One of the reasons for this poor return on investment is that traditionally computing technology was focused on automating routine clerical tasks, improving efficiency of existing processes, and collecting data. Until recently, the value of this data was difficult to understand and use (International Data Corporation study, 1996).

Healthcare Information systems are inherently difference than in any other industry. What works for other types of Information systems do NOT work for healthcare.

It is our experience that very few of our users understand the potential of Data Analysis. Asking the question "what would you like to have" draws blank stares. If an individual does not know how to drive a car, it does them little good.

We believe that the most important thing that InHCc can do is first "education the user". Once we arm you with the knowledge of what is possible, we will then will provide the tools and education you as to "how" to accomplish your goals.

Some individuals talk about computers and computers systems as if the computers were the solution to all their problems. Other individuals create long lists of indicators (without any idea as to how to use these indicators or how to manage them). While this produces what we call "Oh Wow" data, it does little to help improve health care and the health status of the individual.

Benefits of Today's Technology

Some of the benefits that are:

  • The ability to see and the "big picture" enables the organization to make decisions based on understanding of the entire system rather than using rough estimates based on incomplete data.

  • The ability to integrate the complete system into one meaningful whole.

  • The ability to simultaneously understand and manage both the macro and micro perspectives of the organization.

The Problem

The Problem is that there stills seems to be the belief by many that we do not need to centralize the data, that it can be "transferred" easily between multi providers when needed.

Because no proprietary company wants to share data with anyone else, centralization is not going to happen without a little encouragement

Nothing, almost nothing, is being directed at the real advantage of networking in health care—research

Future

Yeah...moving so fast that it is almost impossible to keep up. See the "Prediction" Section
