Clinical Decision Support Systems

A computer clinical decision support system is a computer-based medical Decision Support System (DSS)  designed to help health care professionals make clinical decisions.

Many systems today provide passive information to the user. This information may be as simple as links to Web Sites where new research may be found, to being able to access the patients latest lab results.

A tremendous amount of effort has already been carry out on dynamic systems that interact with the user. Examples of these systems are expert systems and computer "hints." Overall they have been shown to improve the quality of care and reduce cost (Lindberg and Humphreys (1998) and Hunt et al. (1998)).

Future research on DDS may be directed to developing countries to improve their quality of care, reduce costs, and serve as training systems.
