A.1- Population
DEFINITION: All the inhabitants of a country, territory, or geographic area, in total or by sex and/or age group, at a specific point of time. In demographic terms it is the total number of inhabitants or of a given sex and/or age group that actually live within the border limits of the country, territory, or geographic area at a specific point of time, usually mid-year. The mid-year population refers to all residents as of July 1st.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Absolute Magnitude
MEASURE UNITS: Thousands
CATEGORIES: Total, Male, Female
SUBCATEGORIES: less than 1 year, 1-4 years, 5-14 years, 15-44 years, 45-64 years, 65 years and older

A.2- Proportion of urban population
DEFINITION: The percentage of total population of a country, territory, or geographic area living in places defined as urban, at a specific point of time, usually mid-year. The term urban refers essentially to cities, towns, and other densely populated areas. The demarcation of urban areas is usually defined by countries as part of census procedures, and is usually based on the size of localities, and/or the classification of areas as administrative centers or according to special criteria such as population density or type of economic activity of residents. There is no international consensus on the definition of urban areas, and national operational definitions may vary from country to country.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Urban population data represent mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Proportion
MEASURE UNITS: Percent

A.3- Proportion of population less than 15 years old
DEFINITION: The percentage of the total population of a country, territory, or geographic area, under 15 years of age, for a given sex and at a specific point of time, usually mid-year.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Proportion
MEASURE UNITS: Percent
CATEGORIES: Total, Male, Female

A.4- Proportion of population aged 60 years and older
DEFINITION: The percentage of the total population of a country, territory, or geographic area, 60 years of age and over, in total or by sex and at a specific point of time, usually mid-year.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Proportion
MEASURE UNITS: Percent
CATEGORIES: Total, Male, Female

A.5- Dependency ratio
DEFINITION: The average number of economically dependent population per 100 economically productive population, for a given country, territory, or geographic area, at a specific point in time. In demographic terms, economically dependent population is defined as the sum of the population under 15 years of age plus the population 65 years of age and over, for a given country, territory, or geographic area, at a specific point in time, usually mid-year; economically productive population is defined as the population between 15 and 64 years of age, for the same country, territory, or geographic area, at the same specific point in time.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Index
MEASURE UNITS: Dependent persons per 100 productive persons

A.6- Annual population growth rate
DEFINITION: The annual average rate of change of population size, for a given country, territory, or geographic area, during a specified period. It expresses the ratio between the annual increase in the population size and the total population for that year, usually multiplied by 100. The annual increase in the population size is defined as a sum of differences: the difference between births less deaths and the difference between immigrants less emigrants, in a given country, territory or geographic area for a given year.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population growth rate is generally based either on an intercensal population growth rate calculated from two censuses, each adjusted for incompleteness, or on the components of population growth, namely, numbers of births, deaths, immigrants, and emigrants, adjusted for incompleteness when necessary, during a specific period. Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections. (The annual increase (numerator) may be calculated as (births less deaths) + (immigrants less emigrants) divided by the total population (denominator) estimated at mid-year. However, due to the unavailability of data, usually it is calculated using the change between two censuses)

TYPE: Rate
MEASURE UNITS: Percent

A.7- Total fertility rate
DEFINITION: The expected average number of children that would be born to a woman in her lifetime, if during the course of her childbearing years, she were to experience the age-specific fertility rates prevailing in a given year or period, for a given country, territory, or geographic area.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Total fertility rate is directly calculated as the sum of age-specific fertility rates (usually referring to women aged 15 to 49 years), or five times the sum if data are given in five-year age groups. An age- or age-group-specific fertility rate is calculated as the ratio of annual births to women of a given age or age-group to the population of women of the same age or age-group, in the same year, for a given country, territory, or geographic area. Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Index
MEASURE UNITS: Children per woman

A.8- Annual birth average
DEFINITION: The total number of live births expected in a specific year, for a given country, territory, or geographic area.
TECHNICAL NOTE: The annual births average corresponds to an estimated value, consistent with the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Absolute Magnitude
MEASURE UNITS: Thousands

A.9- Crude birth rate
DEFINITION: The ratio between the number of live births in a population during a given year and the total mid-year population for the same year, usually multiplied by 1,000 for a given country, territory, or geographic area.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values, obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Rate
MEASURE UNITS: Per 1,000 inhabitants

A.10- Annual death average
DEFINITION: The total number of deaths expected in a specific year, for a given country, territory, or geographic area.
TECHNICAL NOTE: The annual deaths average corresponds to a mid-year estimated value, consistent with the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Absolute Magnitude
MEASURE UNITS: Thousands

A.11- Crude death rate
DEFINITION: The ratio between the number of deaths in a population during a given year and the total mid-year population for the same year, usually multiplied by 1,000 for a given country, territory, or geographic area.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Population data correspond to mid-year estimated values obtained by linear interpolation of the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections.
TYPE: Rate
MEASURE UNITS: Per 1,000 inhabitants

A.12- Life expectancy at birth
DEFINITION: The average number of years that a newborn could expect to live if, during the course of life, he or she were exposed to the sex- and age-specific death rates prevailing at the time of his or her birth, for a specific year, in a given country, territory, or geographic area.
TECHNICAL NOTE: Life expectancy at birth is derived from life tables and is based on sex- and age-specific death rates. Life expectancy at birth values correspond to mid-year estimates and are consistent with the corresponding United Nations fertility medium-variant quinquennial population projections. (May be Calculated as the total number of years that a given birth cohort can be expected to live if these mortality rates (numerator) continue to apply, divided by the number of children in the cohort (denominator).
TYPE: Index
MEASURE UNITS: Years
CATEGORIES: Total, Male, Female
