"Everyone is a Decision Maker"

Levels of users of Decision Support Systems

As you may already have guess, the different systems may be used by different levels of users.

Original Health Care Worker

The original health care worker (HCW) may use the simple query to ask how many clients he had today or how many contraceptives he has distributed. He also may use the OLAP system to compare the month-to-date totals with the month-to-date totals of the year before.

2nd Level Manager

The next level manager may use the OLAP to manage. If he knows why something has happened, he may be able to correct or to improve on the event.

3rd Level Manager

The district level manager needs to be able to predict what is going to happen and make long term plans. He uses Data Mining.

National Government Department Manager

The national government statistical department needs information from all three types of decision support systems. They need to report what has happened. They to be able to explain what happen. They must be able to plan for the effective use of resources.

Executive Information Systems (EIS)

EIS is a way to prevent data to managers in a way that they can use it quickly and easily.

Many managers may want a report that gives them the data they need to manage their units but are not sure about how to go about it doing it. EIS reports the key indicators that have been developed for his level of management and only his level of management. He don’t have to sort through all the piles of data just to get what he needs to manage. It is a great training tool.

Advantages are that the indicators are pictured in front of him. The manager can learn easily from repeated use of the visualization tool.

Using Web technology, EIS can be augmented by being included in a simple presentation format such as MS Power Point or formatted as a web page. Links can be added to web-based applications that perform simple “drill down” analysis.
