Introduction

Accounting has been the back-bone of most organizational efforts to accumulate information. However, accounting has been severely "under-used." In general, this has been because the process of accounting has been limited to simple "bookkeeping" or reporting to outside viewers.

One book on accounting concepts defines accounting as "meeting your obligation of accountability." Then states that you need to (1) know how you have spent the finances available to you; and (2) ensure that the money you control has been spent as intended.

Accounting has a lot more to offer. Accounting is the act of providing data to management in such a way as to allow the manager to manager...to "control" the way that resources are used. Accounting is used to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of resource allocation.

Accounting can be broken into several specialized area

  • General Accounting
  • Cost Accounting
    • Financial Accounting
    • Managerial Accounting

General Accounting generally focuses on reporting to stakeholders.

Cost Accounting focuses on the costing of products and services.

Financial Accounting focuses on the use of information for the investments of the organizations resources.

Managerial Accounting focuses on the use of information for making strategic decisions.
