IntroductionSafety is a big issue and it should be, however, building "Safety" in the computer systems can cause more problems. There is much literature that is now being written that automatic checking, i.e. alerts...are causing errors. Instead of check, check, check by the physician or nurse, now many HCP's are leaving it to the computer to catch any mistakes...not cool! ImagingMany HIS systems list as one of their advantages the ability to store images. First of all, a high percentages of HCP do not know how to read images...it is really scary to think that they are attempting to interpret images! A better and safer procedure is to keep the images where they should be...in a data storage devise and only storage the radiologist report in the patient's record. There is no need for the actual x-ray or diagnosis image. In many cases today, the imaging is actually read by a professional that may be many miles away. |
